Land Activities – Gozo
Sightseeing: The Medieval Cittadella (Victoria)
Description & Points of Interest. A massive, fortified crown city sitting on the highest hill in Gozo's capital. It features sweeping, uninterrupted 360-degree views across the entire island's patchwork fields and coastlines. Walk along the high stone ramparts and explore the hidden silos and historic prisons.
Location. Victoria (Rabat), Central Gozo.
Travel Tip. Entrance to the historic city grounds is completely free. Go just before dusk; the golden hour light hitting the yellow limestone walls is spectacular, and the crowds drop off significantly.
Museum: Ġgantija Megalithic Temples
Description & Points of Interest. A UNESCO World Heritage complex of massive, free-standing stone structures that are exceptionally ancient. Dating back to 3600 BC, these temples are older than both Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids. The sheer size of the limestone blocks led ancient locals to believe they were built by a race of giants.
Location. Xagħra, Gozo.
Travel Tip. Your entrance ticket seamlessly includes access to the exceptional modern interpretation museum on site. It provides vital historical context before you step out onto the actual outdoor archaeological walkways.
Culinary: Traditional Gozitan Ftira at Maxokk Bakery
Description & Points of Interest. This is not standard pizza; a true Gozitan Ftira uses a traditional leavened bread dough disc topped with thinly sliced local potatoes, fresh sheep's milk cheese (ġbejniet), salted anchovies, capers, and onions, all baked inside a wood-fired stone oven that has been running for generations.
Location. Nadur, Gozo.
Travel Tip. Maxokk operates as a strict, traditional take-away bakery. Call in your order 30 minutes in advance, pick it up piping hot, and drive down to the nearby cliffs of San Blas or Ramla Bay to eat it overlooking the sea.
Beach: Ramla l-Ħamra (The Red Sand Bay)
Description & Points of Interest. Gozo's largest and most famous sandy beach, renowned for its unique, rich coppery-orange sand. A beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary sits right in the center of the dunes. You can hike up the cliffs on the right-hand side to find Mixta Cave, a natural rocky window that frames an iconic look down over the entire bay.
Location. Northern Coast, Gozo.
Travel Tip. The beach has excellent amenities, including public restrooms and small local snack shacks. The public bus drops you off directly at the sand entry point.
Non-Diving In-Water Activity: Floating the Deep Inland Sea (San Lawrenz)
Description & Points of Interest. A massive, natural inland saltwater lagoon surrounded by high cliffs. It is connected to the open Mediterranean solely via a dramatic, 80-meter long tunnel slicing straight through the solid rock cliff face. Non-divers can swim, snorkel, or take a small, traditional wooden boat ride right through the dark tunnel to look out at the deep open ocean drop-offs outside.
Location. Dwejra Point, Western Gozo (directly adjacent to the Blue Hole dive site).
Travel Tip. This is the perfect spot for non-diving partners to hang out while you carry out your deep dive at the Blue Hole. Local fishermen run constant boat trips through the tunnel for just a few euros.
