Sightseeing: The Historic Fortified City of Valletta
Description & Points of Interest. Built completely by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century, Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage site packed with Baroque architecture, massive stone bastions, and dramatic, grid-patterned sloping streets. Must-see highlights include the Upper Barrakka Gardens, which offer an iconic panoramic view over the Grand Harbour, and the daily noon firing of the Saluting Battery.
Location. South-Eastern Region, Malta.
Travel Tip. Avoid driving and parking inside Valletta at all costs. Instead, park in the MCP multi-story car park just outside the City Gate in Floriana, or take the highly efficient passenger ferry from Sliema directly across the harbor to the Valletta waterfront.
Museum: St. John's Co-Cathedral
Description & Points of Interest. Do not let the plain, fortress-like stone exterior fool you; the interior is an explosion of intricate, gold-leaf Baroque art. The entire marble floor is a tapestry of ornamental tombstones of legendary knights. The cathedral museum houses Caravaggio's absolute masterpiece, The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, the only painting the artist ever signed.
Location. Republic Street, Centre of Valletta.
Travel Tip. Strict dress codes are enforced. Shoulders and knees must be fully covered, and stiletto heels are strictly banned to protect the priceless marble floors. Shawls are usually provided at the door if needed.
Culinary: Traditional Fenkata in the Walled City of Mdina
Description & Points of Interest. Mdina is an ancient, silent medieval city sitting on a high hill in the center of the island. After exploring its winding, torch-lit stone alleys, head down to the neighboring village of Rabat to experience a traditional Fenkata (Maltese slow-cooked rabbit stew infused with garlic, local red wine, and bay leaves).
Location. Central Malta.
Travel Tip. Combine a late afternoon walk through Mdina with dinner at an authentic restaurant in Rabat. You can easily find free public parking lots situated right outside the main Mdina moat gates.
Beach: Għajn Tuffieħa (Riviera Marine Park)
Description & Points of Interest. A striking, naturally preserved crescent of fine ochre-red sand flanked by raw, clay hills and dramatic cliffs. It is far more scenic, wild, and untouched than the commercialized Golden Bay right next door.
Location. North-Western Coastline, near Mġarr.
Travel Tip. Accessing the beach requires walking down a long staircase of exactly 200 stone steps. This keeps the massive crowds away but requires a good level of physical fitness to climb back up in the summer heat.
Non-Diving In-Water Activity: Snorkelling the Ghar Lapsi Cave Systems
Description & Points of Interest. A small, natural rocky cove that forms a beautifully protected swimming pool sheltered from open ocean swells. Non-divers can snorkel through a series of shallow, sun-dappled underwater caves and rock fissures that sit in just 2 to 5 meters of crystal-clear water.
Location. Southern Coastline, near Siġġiewi.
Travel Tip. There is an exceptional local fish restaurant located right on the rocks above the cove. It makes the perfect lunchtime stopover after completing a deep morning dive at the nearby Um El Faroud.
Nightlife: The Open-Air Bars of Valletta Strait Street
Description & Points of Interest. Historically known as "The Gut," this narrow alley was the raucous nightlife hub for British sailors in the mid-20th century. Today, it has been completely restored into an upscale, vibrant strip of chic wine bars, intimate live jazz dens, and open-air tables spilling directly onto the cobblestones.
Location. Strait Street, Valletta.
Travel Tip. Skip the generic, loud commercial clubs of Paceville (St. Julian's) and opt for Valletta's wine bars instead. It provides a vastly superior, highly authentic atmosphere with excellent local cheese platters and Maltese wines like Gellewża or Girgentina.
